February Wrap up 2019

Monthly Wrap Up

February was a bit of a slow month for me, I started playing a lot of Elder Scrolls Skyrim, which is interesting because I hated that game when I first started it but I’ve been giving it a second chance and I am addicted. So that’s taken some reading time away from me but I’ve also been feeling so tired that I start reading but fall asleep so quickly. I keep telling my bf that I feel like I should be hibernating. I’m hoping my reading interest picks up in the spring as the sun starts coming out more.

That being said, I did get a bit of reading done so let’s get into that.

The Wicked King
by Holly Black
my rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This book was so intense, I had such a good time reading it and reading about the water fae. I do feel like I missed something that happened to make the ending happen the way it did and I remember feeling that way when I read the Cruel Prince. Other then that, this was a delightful sequel and I anxiously await for the finale.

The Dead Queens Club
by Hannah Capin
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this, I had so much fun reading this and seeing all of the historical points of interest and references. I thought that the storytelling was clever and true to the “Tudors meets Mean Girls” pitch.

Slayer
by Kiersten White
my rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I was curious about this going into it because I wasn’t sure about the direction of the story but I shouldn’t have been worried because this was everything I wanted from a Buffyverse story. I wrote a full review with further thoughts, you can read that here.

The Simple Wild
by K.A. Tucker
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I think this might be one of my favorite books of the year so far, it was so good, I fell in love with the Alaskan setting which I wasn’t expecting to and I loved how all of the characters had character progression and that impressed me as I typically feel that the main character is the sole focus of growth, sometimes the love interest grows. But Calla, Jonah, and Wren all noticeably grew.

Mansfield Park
by Jane Austen
my rating: 3 out of 5 stars

This might be towards my least favorite of Austen novels, but I’m not sure if that’s due to the story or the audiobook I listened to for it, I had a hard time focusing on parts of the story and I didn’t care for many of the characters.

The Winter of the Witch
by Katherine Arden
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I am so sad that this series is over, I loved seeing Vasya come into her own and become this force of nature and carve out a place for herself. I can’t wait to see what Katherine Arden comes out with next.

That Month in Tuscany
by Inglath Cooper
my rating: 2 out of 5 stars

I felt so let down by this because there were so many tropes that I really enjoyed, I loved the Tuscan setting and I adore when characters are artists but that wasn’t enough to save this story in my eyes. I hated the characters, I found them to be boring at best and shitty people at the worst.

The Kingdom of Copper
by S.A. Chakraborty
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I was so happy to be back in this world, the setting is so vivid and rich, I loved being reunited with these characters. The storytelling is so phenomenal, Chakraborty takes the story in directions that I never would have thought of and in an order that kind of surprises me. I loved seeing Nahri remember who she was in Cairo and bring that back into her personality.

The mountains are yearning.
