December 2018 Wrap Up (my best reading month ever!)

TBR (1)

Oh my God. I did it.
Earlier this year I made two goals for myself. One of them was to write a rough draft of a novel and the other goal was to read 200 books. Guys, I completed both of those goals!

I still cant believe that I did it, I feel burnt out right now, I don’t even know what to do with myself to try to relax and recharge.
This month was probably my best reading month ever, I read 26 books and I liked so many of them so let’s get into my reading month.

TTT Dec 25 Books I Hope I Find Under My Christmas Tree This Morning

ttt

There’s a lot of fantasy on this list, I’ve been in a huge fantasy mood lately, not that it’s unusual. But I usually go for Young Adult fantasy but as of late, I find myself gravitating more and more towards adult fantasy.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

December 25: Books I Hope I Find Under My Christmas Tree This Morning (If you don’t celebrate Christmas, spin this to be a book wish list.)

Sailor Moon Eternal Editions
by Naoko Takeuchi

These are gorgeous and I want to collect them all!

Iron and Magic
by Ilona Andrews

I saw that this was a finalist for the Goodreads Choice Awards and it sounds like something that I would enjoy.

The Eye of the World
by Robert Jordan

I’ve heard many amazing things about this series, some of my family members have read it as well and I want to see what this series has to offer.

Middlemarch
by George Eliot

I don’t quite remember how this book came to be on my radar but it is right now and I am very curious about it.

Red Sister
by Mark Lawrence

I’ve heard a lot of great things about this and I was hesitant to start it because I thought I would have to read the two other trilogies before I could get to this but that doesn’t sound to be the case, therefore I am moving this up on my priority list.

Blades of the Old Empire
by Anna Kashina

I stumbled across this a few weeks ago while browsing through Barnes and Noble and I can’t seem to stop thinking about it.

Age of Myth
by Michael J Sullivan

One of the books in this series was also a finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards and it sounds fantastic but its like book 5 in the series, so I gotta get my hands on this soon.

In the Shadow of the Gods
by Rachel Dunne

I have no idea how I stumbled across this book.

Kill The Queen
by Jennifer Estep

The same case as Blades of the Old Empire, I stumbled across this in Barnes and Noble and it just sounds so intriguing.

The Inheritance Trilogy
by N.K. Jemisin

I haven’t even started the Fifth Season yet but I already want this trilogy. I just have this feeling that N.K. Jemisin is going to be a favorite author of mine.

Salt to the Sea

This book was incredibly memorable to me. I think it did a wonderful job of capturing the desperation for survival that consumed a lot of people and showed the lengths that people would go to in order to survive. There were scenes in here that horrified me and still haunt me at times. But its a hypnotic story about an event that not a lot of people know about despite how tragic it is.

Scythe

I really enjoyed this, the idea of the grim reaper was elevated to an extreme human job and I just love how everything was done.

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda

This is one of my favorite books of all time, I adore Simon and loved his story, I love how he grew as a person. I just love it so much.

Six of Crows

I dont know what to say about this one, I loved everything. The heist, the characters, the writing, I literally have nothing negative to say about this.

Sky in the Deep

This was a debut earlier this year that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on, it was pitched as a wonder woman meets Vikings and that’s all I knew about it as I jumped into. To me, that was a perfect description and I didn’t feel let down by hype at all, I feel like this story delivered its pitch.

Strange the Dreamer

I think about this book all the time, I also hate myself for not starting Muse of Nightmares yet, but I loved this story, Lazo was a sweet endearing character and I loved the setting of Weep and the giant library at the start.

What did you recently finish reading?

The Well of Ascension
by Brandon Sanderson

Omg this book, this series is just fantastic. I cant wait to read Way of Kings because I’ve heard a lot of people say that its better then Mistborn and at this point in time, I cant imagine what that could look like. I really enjoyed how politics took the center stage here and I felt absolutely breathless for the last 150 pages or so.

Godsgrave
by Jay Kristoff

I’m so happy I finally read this, I’ve been wanting to since I finished Nevernight. I loved the gladiator twist this book had and you really saw Mia grow as a character and began to open her heart up to others. I also really like how Jay writes in narratives about how Mia’s actions started up the legends, it really enhances the story.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I don’t even know what to say about this one, it was incredible, I cannot say enough good things about the writing, it was hypnotic and dragged you in. The writing was the same way that Evelyn was described, it and she, draws you in and leaves you wanting more.

What are you currently reading?

The Hero of Ages
by Brandon Sanderson

I am 300 pages into this and the only thing I don’t like about it so far is Elend’s character, I cant put my finger on what it is that’s bothering me about him but I don’t like it.

Queen of Air and Darkness
by Cassandra Clare

I hate to say this but I’m going to, I’m not that into this. I’m about 340 pages in and I’m struggling to connect to the story. I’m kind of just picking it up here and there and reading a few pages at a time and none of them have hooked me and left me wanting to know what happens next. I am going to stick with it though and finish it and I think I can finish it sometime this week.

Record of A Spaceborn Few
by Becky Chambers

I plan to pick this up today whenever I go on break at work and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve loved the other two books Becky has written and I cant wait to see how this finishes the trilogy.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Crazy Rich Asians
by Kevin Kwan

The Simple Wild
by K.A. Tucker

Return of the King
by J.R.R. Tolkien

Ready Player One

Its no secret that this is a long time favorite of him, I’ve reread it so many times and I love the audiobook.

A Reaper at the Gates

I think this one is the best of the series so far, I was practically glued to these pages and loved the story arc that took place.

The Rose Society

Again, this one is my favorite of the trilogy. I loved how dark this was and it seemed to really emphasize that Adelina was not a hero.

Burial Rites
by Hannah Kent

I really enjoyed this and I’m super happy that I read it in December, there’s no better way to read it really. Wait until it gets cold, make some tea, snuggle in a blanket, and then dive into this book. The atmosphere this book creates is amazing, you can feel the cold settling into you. The writing is beautiful, I did have some struggles adapting to the Icelandic language, there’s a guide that shows you how to pronounce some of the names and places, that took a while for me to adjust to, there was a lot of flipping back and forth. I would have loved to listen to the audiobook.

Sadie
by Courtney Summers

Wow. Just wow. This was, I don’t have words. This was so much darker than I was expecting, I knew it was about a girls search for her sister’s murderer, but I would have never expected some of the layers this story added.

What are you currently reading?

The Wise Mans Fear
by Patrick Rothfuss

I am currently on page 666, I had to say it lol just because. But I am loving this so much, I don’t even have words. I was starting to think that I was getting tired of the University aspect but as soon as Kvothe left the University I was fully on board. Omg, I read an epic scene last night that just left me speechless.

Josh and Hazels Guide to Not Dating
by Christina Lauren

Since Sadie was so dark, I decided to pick up something funny and lighthearted to help balance me out, I’ve heard good things about this and I’m excited to read more.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein
by Kiersten White

This will be my next physical book after Josh and Hazels Guide to Not Dating, I am so stoked to pick this up.

The Darkest Kiss
by Gena Showalter

I plan on starting this audiobook after I finish up with The Wise Man’s Fear, I already started this but I wasn’t in the mood for it so I’m going to give it another chance. I also have a feeling that a paranormal romance will be a pick book for after the WMF

Queen of Air and Darkness
by Cassandra Clare

It’s finally here! I feel like I’ve been waiting for this for years instead of, well, just the one year… This book is how I’m going to be spending the weekend and that’s it lol. I may squeeze in some cookie baking but for the most part, I’m going to sit on the couch or in my bed and read this beauty like my life depends on it.

November 2018 Wrap Up

TBR (1)

November was a slow reading month for me, I was doing NaNoWriMo and so that didn’t give me as much reading time as I would have liked. This does mean I’m going to have to dedicate a majority of my time in December to reading if I want to reach my goal of 200 books. At this point, it seems like a stretch but it also seems doable.

Trial by Fire
by Josephine Angelini
my rating: 2 out of 5 stars

I wish I had liked this more than I did, I found myself wanting less of the angsty romance and more about the parallel worlds.

The Darkest Night
by Gena Showalter
my rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I picked this up after several friends recommended it to me, several different times. This took me a long time to get into, the characters were frustrating at points. Maddox is definitely not the brightest crayon in the box and that got old very fast, there’s also a lot of alpha machoness that drove me crazy.

Saga Volume 9
by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I don’t have words for this, but anger because I heard that the series is on hiatus and I need the next issue right now!

Kingdom of Ash
by Sarah J Maas
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this, I was immensely satisfied with the way things wrapped up, I went into this without really many expectations.

Some Kind of Perfect
by Krista and Becca Ritchie
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I wasnt sure what to expect from this, but I ended up really loving it. It was a nice way to say goodbye to all of these amazing characters.

Wicked Plants
by Amy Stewart
my rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I picked this up to help with some research for my NaNoWriMo project and this was very helpful and fun to read. I was a tad disappointed when some plants I was looking for werent listed and it wasn’t as long as I wished it could have been. I found myself wanting more information.

NaNoWriMo 2018 Wrap Up

Its the last day of NaNoWriMo!

Its always sad to say goodbye.

Songs I’ve been listening to- Sarcasm by Get Scared

I can’t believe that NaNoWriMo is over and I can’t believe that I actually hit 50,000 words. I didn’t think I would be able to make it, I had to say goodbye to my 18-year-old cat and I stopped caring about my project. I couldn’t bring myself to care when my heart was hurting so much. But on day 30 I was talking with a friend and she reminded me about all my struggle to get here, all the hard work I’ve put in, and how close I was. I could grieve and finish the story at the same time, I could tap into my feelings and use them. It was hard but I am satisfied that I pushed through. I’m just not as happy as I wish I was.

What I plan to do differently for Camp NaNoWriMo-

I wish I had kept a tiny journal of a daily summary of what I wrote and the word count. I wasn’t super diligent about using the NaNoWriMo word tracker so I wish I had something to look back on.
