My favorite Book to Movie Adaptations

Lord of the Rings

I didn’t quite love the Hobbit movies in term of a book to movie adaptation, I don’t think they needed to be stretched out into 3 movies, it just seemed a bit excessive. However, I love the Lord of the Rings movies, I haven’t read the trilogy yet but there was no way that I could have made this list without mentioning The Lord of the Rings.

Overall I do like the movie adaptations of Harry Potter, I do have some issues with the movies but in the end, I do love them.

The Martain

The Martain may be one of my favorite books to movie adaptations ever. I loved it so much, although I wish there were a few lines from the book that could have added to the movie. Specifically, one line about Aquaman…

Matilda

I think Matilda was one of the first books to movie adaptations I ever watched in my life, I loved Danny Devito in this and I think it stuck close enough to the book to satisfy me.

The Outsiders

I know that there is a lot of controversy going on with The Outsiders right now due to the author being a bit of a shitty person. However, I don’t think you understand how much I love Patrick Swayze and I will continue to love the Outsiders because of Patrick Swayze in the movie (along with the rest of the dream cast) and when I read the book earlier this year I could hear Patrick Swayze’s voice saying his lines.

Putting my love for Patrick Swayze aside, this is a shining example of a good book to movie adaptation. Not only does the movie follow the book perfectly I think it’s also had the perfect cast.


Outlander

Outlander! I couldn’t not talk about Outlander and now I need to gush about the perfection of Sam Heughan, he’s just gorgeous and awesome and such a great human being. And in terms of book to movie adaptation I give it a rating of 7 out of 10 with 10 being perfect and spot on.


Holes

It’s been a really long time since I’ve both read the book and watched the movie but I remember that I was really satisfied with the adaptation.

The Other Boleyn Girl

While I do have some issues with the movie overall I’m just generally satisfied with it. I also love this cast and I want to rewatch and reread to refresh my experience.

Now these are two books that I haven’t read yet but I love the movies and I want to read the books soon so I thought I would just mention these. I do own both these books though and I will read them soon!

Memoirs of a Geisha

  3. I have read every one of these, and no movie is better than the book in any of these “adaptations”. Best book to film? Bridges of Madison County, Horse Whisperer, Gone with the Wind and So Big ( Jane Wyman. Book by Edna Ferber) Runner ups: Random Harvest and Mildren Peirce. Absolute Worst is a tie between Joan Rivers’ Rabbit Test and The Exorcist

    1. I wanted to put Gone with the wind in this list but idk if I ever finished reading it, I started it my sophomore year of high school around finals and if memory serves correctly I don’t think I ever picked it back up again.

  4. Oh I love Matilda!! I just watched it the other day, actually. I completely forgot about Holes. I loved that movie when I was a kid. It’s such a great adaptation, too!

  5. LOTR and Harry Potter are both such good adaptations – I agree with you that they do have flaws, but on the whole they’re great to watch. I’ve not read The Princess Bride, but the film was a lot of fun, and Memoirs of a Geisha has been on both my watch and read lists for such a long time! Funnily enough, I went to visit the read bamboo forest that’s on the from of the DVD cover just the other day! 🙂

  7. Great list! A big YES to Outlander, which is one of my favorite things ever. 🙂 We have a few movies in common this week (HP, LOTR, Princess Bride). I agree that The Martian was a terrific adaptation, and I actually like the Matilda movie more than the book. The Princess Bride is absolutely worth reading, and so is Memoirs of a Geisha (I thought the book was better).
