Writers Life Tag

I stumbled across this tag over at coffeennotes and it looked fun so I thought I would do it. I love to write and I mostly just write short stories.

Write-fuel: What do you eat or drink while writing?
Coffee or Soda (usually its Coca-Cola) or water. I’ll eat whatever snacky type food I have around the house. Also, candy is always a must, lately I’ve been loving peanut butter cups.

Write-sounds: What do you listen to while writing?
I usually listen to gaming music, it keeps me focused and doesn’t distract me with lyrics. My favorites are the scores from Assassin’s Creed 2, Batman the Arkham Knight, and Tomb Raider.

Write-vice: What is your biggest writing distraction?
It’s a tie between the Internet and my cat.

Write-horror: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you while writing?
Writers Block; last year I had a goal to write a novel, I got through 6 separate chapters and in the middle of chapter 7, the story just stopped, and to this day, I haven’t been able to add anything to it.

Write-joy: What’s the best thing that ever happened to you while writing?
The best part is finishing a story or letting your friends read it for the first time and seeing that they genuinely love it.

Write-crew: Who you communicate with or not communicate with while writing?
I communicate with my boyfriend and my best friend the most. The bf is great at listening and he always helps brainstorm with me. My bestie also loves writing and she is also really good at advice and helpful criticism.

Write-secret: What your secret to success and your biggest writing flaw?
The #1 “secret” for writing: Just write, doesn’t matter what you write because you don’t have to share it with anyone but just write and let your creativity out!
My writing flaw: my flaw is that I don’t listen to my own advice. My other flaw is that I will leave the story half finished, I easily have a dozen or so unfinished WIP pieces.

Write-spiration: What inspires you? Or what makes you productive?
I daydream a lot and that’s where I come up with half my stories, sometimes I just get an idea in my head, and other times I’ll be reading and think “I could write something better” or “I would do this differently” and that just gets the wheels in my head turning.

Write-peeve: What is one thing you do or other writers do that’s annoying?
I hate the way I write. I write the first draft in first person and then when I go edit everything, I change the POV to third person. It’s a giant pain in the ass!

Write-words: Are you willing to share something you’ve written?
Maybe one day, I do have a Wattpad account or I could create a page on my blog and post something there but only if people are wanting to read it and offer constructive criticism.

Dreamology Review

by Lucy Keating
322 pages
my rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Vibrantly offbeat and utterly original, Lucy Keating’s debut novel combines the unconventional romance of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with the sweetness and heart of Jenny Han.

For as long as Alice can remember, she has dreamed of Max. Together, they have traveled the world and fallen deliriously, hopelessly in love. Max is the boy of her dreams—and only her dreams. Because he doesn’t exist.

But when Alice walks into class on her first day at a new school, there he is. Real Max is nothing like Dream Max. He’s stubborn and complicated. And he has a whole life Alice isn’t a part of. Getting to know each other in reality isn’t as perfect as Alice always hoped.

Alarmingly, when their dreams start to bleed into their waking hours, the pair realize that they might have to put an end to a lifetime of dreaming about each other. But when you fall in love in your dreams, can reality ever be enough?

My thoughts:

I gotta say real quick: How gorgeous is this cover?! I can’t get enough of it! I love the blend of colors, the font, and the eyes. It’s so stunning!

Unfortunately, the stunning cover was the best thing that the book had going for it. Despite the creative idea, the story was really lacking in excitement. I struggled to get through the book with the insane belief that the story could improve. Aside from the random dreams, nothing exciting happens.

First thing first, this came up right away and it annoys the hell out of me whenever I see it happen in YA Novels. It annoys me to see school authority figures say things like “avoid the troublemakers” or “take care not to be involved with the bad students,” or “we wouldn’t want to see you fall in with that group”
maybe it was because I went to public school but my principle, teachers, and other authority people didn’t give a shit who you hung out with. No one cared but I see this come up in contemporary reads all the time. And on the other hand, maybe it’s different in private schools where students are Ivy League-bound.

Sometimes I feel like school figures take too much interst in just one persons life and I find that to be very unrealistic.

As for the characters; this was another situation where I liked the secondary characters a lot more than the primary characters. Alice was one of the most boring characters I have ever met and there wasn’t anything remotely likable about Max. Both of them were incredibly indecisive and immature to the point where I wanted to reach through the book and smack both of them. You would think that the state of their sanity would be a top concern right? Nope Alice’s top concern was whether or not Max loved her. I feel like her desire to figure out the dreams meaning really took the backseat as she started to get closer to Max.

Another thing that really annoys that happened is when a character tells themselves that they aren’t going to do the thing, but not even 30 seconds later they’re doing the thing. That honestly frustrates me so much.

Now, you’re probably sitting there wondering, “If you hated this so much, why did you keep reading it? Why not just DNF and move onto something better?”

I have a really hard time dnfing books. It just bugs me. I always want to see a book through the end. Don’t know why but just do.

Overall from rereading the synopsis and thinking about the story, it doesn’t divert from it. I went through and read reviews from other readers on Goodreads and I’m honestly thinking “did I even read the same book?”

In the end, this book just wasn’t for me. I’m not going to recommend it to anyone but at the same time, I won’t discourage anyone. Just because it wasn’t my cup of tea doesn’t mean that someone else won’t love it.

Dreamology by Lucy Keating

Overall I did not like. the story was fairly slow paced and overall just boring. not much really happened and there was more telling than showing.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Omg this was amazing!! The illustrations were gorgeous and the story was so gripping. I was an emotional mess by the time it was over.

What are you currently reading?

Empire of Storms

I feel like EoS is going to give me a bit of a bookish hangover, so I have a cutesy contemporary read lined up for afterward.

Top Ten Tuesday: TV Shows I will be watching this fall

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

This week’s topic for TTT is Fall tv, so I’m going to talk about the shows that I will be watching this fall. Now I don’t watch a lot of tv and I actually just had my cable turned off (we had a tv, internet, and a phone bundle at my house and I decided to have the cable turned off.) So I typically watch my favorite shows through the channels website or on Amazon video. The bf wants us to look into Sling Tv (I think that’s what it was) does anyone here use that? If so tell me what you think about it and if I should get it.

So enough chatter, here are the shows that I like to watch.

Arrow Season 5

I love Arrow and even though season 4 ended in a bit of a disappointment, I’m still excited to watch season 5 and see how things go from there.

Flash Season 3

Now if you know me at all, you know that I love Barry Allen, and season 2 had the craziest ending and I am dying to know what happens next.

Plus Tom Felton is going to be in season 3 and I am beyond excited, I am predicting that I will be crying so much more during season 3.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 2

I actually need to finish season 1, but from what I saw of Season 1 I liked.

Orphan Black (all the seasons)

I need to watch Orphan Black so badly!

Outlander season 2

I’m so sad to admit that I’ve only watched the first 3 episodes of season 2. I really need to change that.

Gotham seasons 2 & 3

I actually haven’t seen season 2 at all so I need to binge that and catch up with it.

But I have heard that there will be a revamp of Poison Ivy…and I was really upset about Ivy from the show being Poison Ivy so I will be waiting for that.

Agents of Shield season 4

Season 3 was really emotional and I don’t think I’m ready to watch season 4 just yet but I’m going to have to.

The Big Bang Theory season 10

I love the Big Bang Theory, I really do and I’m so sad that this is the last season. I know that most of the cast wants to go on and do more episodes so I’m hoping it’ll be renewed for more.

The Ranch season 2

Omg I really enjoy this show, for those of you who don’t know, this is a Netflix show that stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson A.K.A Kelso and Hyde from That 70s Show! That 70s Show is one of my favorite shows of all time, I’ve binged it too many times to count and so I immediately recognize when Kutcher and Masterson quote lines from That 70s Show in The Ranch. But outside of that, the show is hilarious on its own and I live for the hope that there will be other 70s show cameos…especially Fez (Wilmer Valderrama)

The 100 Seasons 3 & 4

I’m waiting for season 3 to be added to Netflix, but then I plan to watch season 4 on the CWs website.

I really enjoyed this and I am kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I was really nervous about it being a “filler” book in the trilogy but I was worried for nothing, this was fantastic and gripping.

my rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I was actually disappointed with this, there was a lot of hype and the book didn’t deliver for me. That being said I will definitely continue with the trilogy.

Clipped Wings

my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
review here

Oh Hayden, my new book bf. This was probably one of my favorite books I read over the month.

Inked Armor
by Helena Hunting
my rating: 3 out of 5 stars

And then sadly, I didnt care for the second book. It just didn’t deliver the same emotional feelings

It Ends With Us
by Colleen Hoover
my rating: 3 out of 5 stars

So I have kind of mixed feelings about this, on one hand, it was powerful, emotional, and sent a very strong message. On the other hand, I felt like something was missing from the novel, its hard to say.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
by Michelle Hodkins
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Holy mind blowing f*ck. This was amazing!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
by J.K. Rowling
my rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Overall I just thought this was alright, didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, don’t regret buying it. So just alright

Second Chance Summer
by Morgan Matson
my rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

This was my least favorite of the month and my least favorite Morgan Matson book. I did not enjoy it at all.

The Outsiders
by S.E. Hinton

So that’s my wrap-up for August.
Favorite read: Clipped Wings
