Ten Thousand Skies Above You

This was amazing! I can’t wait for the third book, things were just so crazy at the end. The best thing is that it didn’t fall into the typical role that the second book in a trilogy tends to be. It wasn’t a filler book at all but crucial to the trilogy which I thought was awesome.

Second Chance Summer

I did not care for this story at all. It could have easily been 150-200 pages shorter and for most of the book, I felt like nothing actually happened. I was more concerned about the secondary characters than I was for Taylor, she was so melodramatic and kind of boring. It felt like she didn’t have much of a personality at all.
Overall I am really glad that I didn’t read this book before Since You’ve Been Gone and The Unexpected Everything because I probably wouldn’t have picked up any of her other books.

The Outsiders

This was absolute perfection! When I was in 8th grade I watched Dirty Dancing for the first time and fell head over heels in love with Patrick Swayze; Dirty Dancing and The Outsiders are my favorite movies of his. To this day I still cry when I watch Dirty Dancing, I wore head to toe black for a week when he passed.

So when I was reading this I could hear all of the actor’s voices for the characters and I was feeling really emotional hearing Patrick Swayze’s voice for Darry.

The Crowns Game

Today is day 1 of the RYBSAT readathon and I am starting with The Crowns Game. I am really excited for this Russian-inspired fantasy and I have a feeling that I am going to love it!

This is my TBR for RYBSAT in case you’re interested.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Darkest Magic

Next up on my bookshelf is The Darkest Magic and after reading A Book of Spirits and Thieves I am really excited to get to this.

Top Ten Tuesday: Back To School Freebie

August 30: Back To School Freebie

The theme for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday was a “Back to School” freebie, I had the idea to make myself a Sci-Fi Required Reading List.

Science Fiction is a genre that I want to explore more of but I am intimidated by it, I used NPR’s Top 100 SciFi Books list as a guide and picked out books on it that I already owned and made a required reading list for myself.

This Savage Song review

This Savage Song
by Victoria Schwab
427 pages
my rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis via Goodreads:

There’s no such thing as safe.

Kate Harker wants to be as ruthless as her father. After five years and six boarding schools, she’s finally going home to prove that she can be.

August Flynn wants to be human. But he isn’t. He’s a monster, one that can steal souls with a song. He’s one of the three most powerful monsters in a city overrun with them. His own father’s secret weapon.

Their city is divided.

Their city is crumbling.

Kate and August are the only two who see both sides, the only two who could do something.

But how do you decide to be a hero or a villain when it’s hard to tell which is which?

Victoria did it again!

Another Schwab masterpiece!

I was hooked reading this, from start to finish, it gripped me and the only time I put it down was when I had 30 pages left and knew that I had to wait another year for Our Dark Duet. But that hesitation was very short lived as I devoured those pages as quickly as I could.

The characters were super interesting, August is a precious cupcake that I couldn’t help falling in love with! And Kate was so endearing I just wanted to be there and comfort her as everything was happening, not that she would let me but still.

P.S. I really want her metal nails, they sounded super badass!

I only wish that I had a pronunciation guide for the monsters, I feel like I was saying everything wrong in my head and now I can never have a verbal conversation with someone about the book because I will be saying “Sunai”wrong. I also really want to hear someone sing the lullaby to a slow, dark, and creepy beat. I seriously get chills thinking about it.

I loved how the plot progressed, towards the beginning of the book I was thinking that maybe the plot was progressing too quick, there was still 300 pages to go and a lot of things are happening but when I reflect on it, it ended up progressing well for how much happens in the story.

One thing that I really love and I still think about whenever my thoughts drift to This Savage Song is that I love how Schwab was inspired by the violence that is everywhere in our world and she wrote this amazing story from it. In her world, violence created the monsters, I really appreciated that detail in the story.

It’s been a month or so since I’ve read This Savage Song but I already want to reread it. I can’t wait for Our Dark Duet to be published. At this point, I feel like my life is going to be on hold until I get A Conjuring of Light and Our Dark Duet. Then I’m going to go deep into mourning because those are the finals books for the trilogy and the duology.

The Littlebookcottage turns 1!!!

WordPress informed me that it is my 1-year blogiversary!

To be honest it really snuck up on me.

Time really flew by, it seems like just yesterday I started this blog in hopes that I would find some friends to discuss books with. I never imagined how much I would love doing this, though, and how much it would inspire me to improve and strive to do better.

When I saw my reminder it prompted me to go back and look at my earlier posts and cringe at some of the pictures I’ve taken. But it was really fun to go back and see. So I decided to compile a couple of my firsts.

Keep an eye out for that giveaway, once I figure out what I’m going to give away.

Got any ideas of what to give away?

Thank you so much to everyone who follows me, who reads this, and to everyone who supports me.

Clipped Wings by Helena Hunting

I loved this so much! Hayden is bae, that’s all I got. It was delightful and heart-wrenching and smut filled. Just awesome lol.

Inked Armor by Helena Hunting

I actually didn’t like this as much as Clipped Wings, it was still pretty good, just I wasnt as enthused as the first one.

PS I Like You by Kasie West

This was adorable, the main character is a bit whiney and a little annoying but overall this was sweet, cute, and fluffy.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkins

Holy amazing! This book was amazing! It was a total mind f*ck from start to finish. I cant wait to read on with the series.

What are you currently reading?

Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray

I’m really looking forward to reading this, I’ve been wanting to ever since it came out last November but just haven’t been able to get to it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

I’ve seen this movie so many times but I’ve never read the book. I found a cheap copy in Hawaii and one of the BTS Readathon challenges is to read a short book and I chose this one to fill that challenge.

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson

Another TBR challenge for the readathon. Read a book set in Summer- Second Chance Summer. I’m really excited to read another Morgan Matson book.

Ten Books that have been on my TBR for over a year

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

Ten Books That Have Been On Your Shelf (Or TBR) From Before You Started Blogging That You STILL Haven’t Read Yet

The Lux Series

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series! Dee over at bookishkhaleesi really likes this series and she’s probably my biggest motivator to read it!

The Winter Sea

This book has been on my radar for so long! I love the cover and the title and I was all I need to know before I purchased it, recently I read the synopsis for the first time and I realized that it’s set during the Jacobite rising in Scotland, same as Outlander. I loved Outlander so I really want to read this soon.

The Lord of the Rings

I’ve owned this series for about two years now, I’ve started it a couple times but I haven’t gotten anywhere close to finishing it.

I was so excited to buy this, it was on my wish list for years and then I saw it at Half Price Books for a great deal, bought it, and yeah that about sums up my interaction with this book.

World War Z

Another book that I’ve been wanting to read forever and I think the only reason why I haven’t pick it up yet is because I’m not a huge fan of zombies.

The Walled City

I first saw Christine at Polandbananasbook haul this and I had to rush out and get it, it sounded so good! As usual, idk why I haven’t picked it up yet.

Over time I’ve caught myself slowly losing interest in this book, but then I read the synopsis and I want to read it all over again.

Ink Mage

The synopsis sounds awesome! However the first few pages are really slow, how do I know? That’s all I’ve read is the first few pages and can’t get past them 😦

Girl in the Steel Corset

I really want to read something considered steampunk, because I want to DM a D&D session with my friends and my setting is going to be in a steampunk Westeros setting. I feel like I should read a few steampunk novels so that I can build a better steampunk world.

The Bane Chronicles

This is the only Cassandra Clare book I haven’t read and that kinda bums me out. I need to get on this.

Why I Like Readathons

One really weird thing about me is that I like preparation processes and because I’m about 100% sure that no one knows what I mean by that, let me explain.

I like preparing for things; I like getting ready for events. On the blue moon occasions that I actually go out with friends to a bar or to a club, I like the part of the night where you get ready at home with a couple of friends. When I was in high school and going to the school dances, I loved the getting ready process more than the actual dance. Another example is that I love packing for trips, I don’t know about you but when I pack I imagine all the adventures that I am going to have and I am in the belief that the outfit choice can make or break your day and the fun time you could have had.

I’ve gotten off track.

Ashleigh over at afrolicthroughfiction leads these great discussion posts, awhile ago she posted a discussion about readathons and it got me thinking a lot about why I love readathons.

One of the simple things I like to do for readathons is to prepare for them, whether the readathon is for 24 hours, a weekend, a week, or two weeks. Preparing is a simple yet fun way for me to get pumped and excited for it. My prep includes figuring out my TBR, cleaning the house, making meal plans, and crossing off other small items from my to-do list. Not only does a readathon help me feel accomplished with my TBR pile but also with the rest of my life, I now have a lot of my little tasks completed, a meal plan for the week, and a clean house. Life is a little more organized.

Hermit status: Another fact about me, honestly, I am a massive recluse. Big time introvert. I very rarely ever go out, I don’t like going out, I am perfectly happy with just being at home with my cat and the bf most days. Whenever its readathon time my excuse for not going out is “Sorry I’m currently in the middle of a readathon, catch you next week?”

*Side note* my best friend Sam has a mental radar for when I am in the middle of a readathon because that is when she wants to go out. It never fails.

Bookish Community. I love the book community around readathon time, everyone’s excited and everyone is sharing what they are planning on reading, where they are reading at. Everyone is fangirling over reading choices and it’s wonderful. There’s a strong sense of union among book nerds because we’re all doing this together, we’re all putting aside a lot of precious time to read. And especially if a handful of people are reading the same book. When that happens I feel like it’s the bookish equivalent of a multiplayer online game, does that make sense? Everyone is reading it with you, they’re having the same experience and it’s a fun bonding opportunity.

Are you still with me? Did I lose you after the Xbox live comparison?

Things I need during a readathon
Crock pot/slow cooker (amazing kitchen tool. If I could marry it, I would.)
For readathons, I recommend preparing soups or chili and other easy meals I always like to make a batch of pulled pork and just eat pulled pork sandwiches.
snacks (I can’t be the only one who gets hungry when they read.)
my weakness are chips either Salt and Vinegar or Cool Ranch Doritos, besides chips I like ice cream sandwiches, apples, veggies and hummus.
coffee (Bookworm yolos-Just one more chapter. Sleep is for the weak. I’ll sleep when I’m dead.) Coffee is needed for those yolos.
Comfy place to read. Bed. Chair. Couch. where do you like to read? I’ll read anywhere as long as I’m comfy
Music- I do listen to music when I read. There’s something about having music on that really helps me direct my focus on whatever is in front of me when I don’t play music I notice that my thoughts go everywhere and it distracts me. I listen to scores mostly, I love the score from Assassins Creed 2 and Batman Arkham Knight.
Comfy Clothes- Sweatpants/leggings and an oversized t-shirt.

Pokemon Go Tag

The Pokemon Go tag was created by  Aentee at Read at Midnight and all the graphics were created by her.

The lovely Dee at Bookishkhaleesi tagged me to do this and I love Pokemon so let’s do this!

For a couple years, I wasn’t really reading that much, I liked to read but I didn’t have the passion for reading that I had growing up and in my teen years, then I bought Throne of Glass and my passion instantly refueled. I purchased ToG two years ago and just devoured it and it honestly got me back into reading and I probably wouldn’t be blogging if it weren’t for ToG so I have a lot of love for the series.

Harry Potter! I grew up with HP, and will always love it! A funny thing happened the other day, my mom was watching HP and the Deathly Hallows part 2 and she kept calling asking what did he name his son? What’s going on at the part with Harry and Dumbledore? I thought it was hilarious lol.

I honestly have minimal interest in Passenger by Alexandra Bracken, I’m sure that I’ll read it at some point but for now, it doesn’t really interest me.

Until it was pointed out to me I didn’t see the comparisons, but since it was pointed out that Clipped Wings started off as Twilight fanfic, I can’t stop comparing it to Twilight.

The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, I really want to get to them and they are book goals for this year but I am so intimidated by them.

I don’t know what to put for this one, I guess I’ll go with Days of Blood and Starlight because I didn’t want to go to bed without reading this.

Feyre and Rhysand!!

Legend by Marie Lu

I’m gonna go with the Grisha trilogy, I love Six of Crows and will always love to see more stories from the Grisha world.

Angelfall, I was surprised by how dark and badass the story was.

I’ve been seeing a lot of hype for Caraval by Stephanie Garber but I definitely want to read it when it comes out

The Slytherin Editions of the Harry Potter series!!! Anna at MyBookishDream just posted about them in her TTT and they are beautiful!!!

For this question I’m gonna go with Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill, the plot sounds really interesting and the cover is gorgeous!

*Deep Inhale* Victoria Schwab, Sarah J Maas, Cassandra Clare, Marie Lu, Laini Taylor…Those are the top ones.

Empire of Storms! Its been a really long year ever since I finished Queen of Shadows.

I’m super late to this tag so I have no idea who’s done this and who hasnt.

Clipped Wings Review

Clipped Wings
by Helena Hunting
391 pages
my rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Synopsis via Goodreads:

An emotional love story that follows the touch-and-go relationship of Hayden and Tenley; two young people who desperately want to love and be loved but are afraid to completely let go of their pasts.

As Hayden and Tenley navigate their newfound but slightly unstable relationship, they want to trust each other, but Hayden is hiding a dark and shameful past that he doesn’t ever want Tenley to find out about. And Tenley has secrets of her own that could make Hayden run away forever. When Tenley asks Hayden to put a beautifully elaborate tattoo across her back, the two form what they thought was an unshakeable bond. But when Tenley’s past shows up on her doorstep, will Hayden stand by her side…or run?

My Thoughts:

(*Not my graphic*)

“Everyone has scars, Tenley. If we’re lucky, they’re only on the outside”

Warning: there will be lots of me man gushing over Hayden.

Hayden is gorgeous and sexy and hot and I’m head over heels in love with him. I love when male characters are tattoo artists. He is totally my new book boyfriend. Not only is the man extremely sexy with all his tattoos and piercings, but he also reads! Hunting was not playing fair when she wrote out his character because
A. I’m convinced that Hayden is my soul mate and
B. Hayden was perfection.

giphy (6)

It really wasn’t fair not only was he incredibly sexy with his ink and piercings and straight forward flirting but also he was tender and playful with a kitten!!! And the man drives a 68 Camaro! My heart!

I wanted to dive into the book and steal him away for myself!

giphy (10)
^Me chasing after Hayden^

Now if we’re going, to be honest with each other, which I hope we are 😉 I didn’t care about Tenley at all for the first 50 pages or so. I just wanted more of Hayden.

But then, Tenley broke my heart way open; the girl straight up obliterated it! She is adorable and loveable and she will make you feel all the feels!

giphy (7)

Both Hayden and Tenley have extremely tragic backstories and I have a feeling that Inked Armor is going to be even more heartbreaking, I’m really hoping that book 2 will go more into Hayden past and we can learn a little bit more about him.

This book is basically composed of three things: A very sexy man who I have a giant crush on, lots of heartbreak and grief, and smut. I love it!

Yes, there is a good amount of smut, if you arent comfortable with those kinds of scenes, I would warn you against reading this.

One of my weaknesses in NA is when on of the characters is a tattoo artist, I love those scenes where one person is getting inked and the two start connecting; for me, those scenes are so intimate and sensual.

The only thing I didn’t like was the possessiveness Hayden had for Tenley, I don’t like when guys are possessive IRL and I don’t like seeing it written out and romanticized. That was a huge issue I had with Beautiful Disaster. However what made up for it was the self-awareness and realization that being so possessive is not okay and that he didn’t need to act like that.

So yeah I wanna talk more about Hayden but I’ll save that for Inked Armor’s review.

Has anyone else read this? If so I’d love to have someone to talk with.
If not, I encourage you to pick this up 😉
