Dragonfly in Amber

I did it! I finally finished Dragonfly in Amber!
That ending almost killed me! I cant wait to start Voyager!

Snow like Ashes audiobook

I also finished my audiobook of Snow like Ashes, I’ve been wanting to read Ice like Fire for a long time now but I had forgotten a lot of what had happened. I’m really glad I choose to reread this. I also had forgotten how much I loved the world Raasch had created and Meira is a great character.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading Dreams of Gods and Monsters. OMG this book is amazing! I am in love! I’m hoping to finish this today because I have 4 days before I leave for Hawaii and I want to get some other books read and completed before I leave.

Current Audiobook:
An Ember in the Ashes

Since A Torch Against the Night is scheduled to be released at the end of August and I’ve forgotten a lot of what happens in the first book, I decided to do another audiobook reread.

Top 10 Tues: Ten Facts about Me!

ttt

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

1.) I loathe eggs. I seriously hate the smell, taste, and texture of eggs, I just can’t do it.

2.) I have a serious crush on Chris Evans/Captain America

P.S. the bf agreed to my couples Halloween costume idea: We’re going to be Agent Carter and Captain America!!!

captain-america-2-peggy-steve

3.) Growing up I first wanted to be a lawyer, then a journalist, make up artist, and finally a writer

4.) I have never finished any story I’ve ever written, I have dozens of half-finished stories everywhere

5 .) I love rock-climbing but only at the gym, being outside on a real rock terrifies me.

*that ^ is most definitely not a picture of me…Hell to the no*

6.) This book blog is the first blog I have created and stuck with. About 5 years ago I wanted to create a beauty/makeup blog. I created it and never went anywhere with it. In high school, I had a tiny personal blog where I talked about music, movies, anything else in my life that I liked, except for books. I never thought about doing a book blog back then but I wish I had.

7.) I also wanted to create a travel blog but then I thought that I should probably travel more than once every 2 years….

8.) I am completely camera shy and also have extremely bad stage fright.

9.) I used to drive a green Volkswagen Beetle and I miss that car so much! It was like my child!

Also not my car^ but I do see my car driving around all the time in my town….and I get mad because it’s not me driving it. I can’t help it they’re doing it wrong!!

10.) Growing up I wanted to move to New York City so badly, I even applied to NYU, got rejected and so ended that plan. But now? You couldn’t pay me enough to live in a city.

I’m going to Hawaii!

a11c80d55a2a6b8925010621145dd2e1

I’m going to Hawaii for a little over two weeks! My uncle lives on Oahu near Waikiki and he and his girlfriend are going to Japan for two weeks so the bf and I are going to go pet sit for him.

I have never been to Hawaii before, he has lived there for 12 years and I’ve never been to visit before now!

I am beyond thrilled! I have this huge bucket list going on of places I want to go but for the most part, I am going to be parking my butt on the beach and reading/tanning. I feel like you guys are going to be the only ones that will understand how much of my suitcase is going to be consisted of books. Everyone else keeps acting like I’m crazy but overall, reading is my favorite thing to do and I do plan on exploring the island, but I don’t think it’s bad wanting to bring books with me.

That seems like a fairly accurate video.

Thanks to the Tome Topple readathon last month, I’m really wanting to read some more of my big books and since I’ll be there for over 2 weeks I’m bringing a good assortment of books with me. Since I will be reading at the airport as I wait for my plane, reading on the plane, reading on the beach, in the mornings after I wake up and before I go to bed. I’m planning on taking a good chunk out of my TBR pile and instead of bringing a lot of smaller books I’m planning on bringing some bigger ones.

During my stay in Hawaii, there will be two readathons happening: the Booktubeathon is taking place from July 18th to July 24th. Also, the 24 in 48-hour readathon is taking place from the 23rd to the 24th and I definitely plan on participating in that one. I don’t Booktube and I don’t plan to start I’m just planning on following some of the reading sprints.

Aside from Booktube videos, I love watching Whats in my Bag/Whats in my carry on videos on Youtube, so I thought it would be fun to do something similar and show what books I’m going to be bringing and also what’s going to be in my carry on. #becauseIcan

I was really frustrated because I thought that if I could all these books on my kindle then that would save a lot of space for me right? So I looked into it and the Amazon Kindle prices laughed in my face. :/

I refuse to buy an ebook if it’s over 3 dollars, especially if I already own the physical copy and that logic applies to all of these books. They are all priced between $8.99 to $13.99, there is no way in hell that I would ever pay for that. I have a blog post planned to discuss my thoughts on ebooks vs physical copies, so I’ll save some ranting for that future post.

Books:
A Dance with Dragons by George RR Martin
Voyager by Diana Gabaldon
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Tatiana and Alexander by Paulina Simmons
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

I have a ridiculous fear that I am not going to have enough books. Is that just me? My logic says that I will be on vacation for two weeks, that’s two weeks no work and a lot of time to read, blog, and explore the island. I almost don’t think I have enough reading material. At the same time, another part of my brain is like “Cass, you know that you are not going to be able to read all of those in two weeks” Maybe the brain is right…Maybe I’ll take out one. But just one….there is no persuading me to do anything else.

Honestly, I’d rather have too many than not enough. Maybe that’s just me.

My Carry On: A Hershall’s Supply backpack

  • A Dance with Dragons (This will be my airplane read since it is the biggest one and I have a six-hour flight and also the wait in the terminal so lots of time to read this baby.)
  • Laptop (This is always with me when I fly, it never goes beneath the plane.)
  • Kindle so I have options if ADWD gets too intense
  • Travel Journal (I always keep a journal when I travel that’s not my personal journal, I’ll actually be traveling with three journals: personal journal, travel journal, and my book journal) so many journals!
  • Pencil bag, this goes with my journals of course
  • External battery charger for phones and tablets.
  • my DSLR Camera and a digital camera (There is no universe where my DSLR will go beneath the plane. Nope. It goes in my carry on.
  • chargers (can’t really go anywhere without these)

Kindle books: Because I need options
Pride and Prejudice
Persuasion
Jane Eyre
Finding Cinderella
Shades of Doon
the Near Witch
Legacy of Kings

Shows/Movies I have saved to my laptop:
Orphan Black S1 + S2
Deadpool
Star Wars: The Force Awakens20160711_065942

I’m leaving July 17!

I am annoying everyone by keeping a countdown going but I cant help it!

Depending on how my days go, I (so far) plan on blogging every day or at least every other day. It all depends I guess on what I do, because if I do have a day of just sitting around and reading, its not very exciting although I could just talk about what I’m reading and add in a picture of a coconut and a butterfly…that might happen.

Have you ever been to Hawaii? What about Oahu? Any suggestions on where I should go and what I should check out?

Alienated Book Review

*I try to make all reviews spoiler free, I apologize if something slipped my attention*

For some reason, I am not 100% satisfied with this review. I can’t explain it but I just feel like I am forgetting something…oh well posting it anyways.

Alienated
by Melissa Landers
paperback
344 pages
book 1 of the Alienated Trilogy
my rating 4 out of 5 stars

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.
Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.
But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life-not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

My thoughts:

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought that I would. Every time I’ve thought about picking this up, it just looked like a fluffy sci-fi read (weird way to describe it I know) and I wasn’t that interested. But I read this, I was in the middle of a readathon and one of the challenges was to read a book that’s been on your TBR for over a year and originally I choose Pride and Prejudice, which I was really liking so don’t get me wrong. I was reading it very slowly, so I decided to put it aside for now and pick up something that would be a quicker read but also one that’s been on my TBR for a year. That’s when Alienated came to mind.

Alienated was a neat blend between YA Contemporary and Sci-Fi, it sounds like an odd combo but it just worked out. I was hooked after chapter 1 and I flew through this in about two sittings, it was just what I needed.

There were three things within this book that shocked/intrigued me:

Discrimination/Racism played a huge part of the conflict within the book.
A heartbreak that focused on the loss of a friendship instead of the loss of a romantic relationship.
No instalove and no love triangles.

First thing is that there is a lot more to the story than I thought there would be, it turned out to be an interesting storyline. You have this alien boy who is a foreign exchange student with the world, now since most of the human race can’t even to handle different skin colors, how do you imagine having an alien life form around them would turn out?

Yeah not so well.

I found the human reaction to discovering alien life to be so accurate to what I imagine would actually happen IRL. I kept comparing all of the situations and things that happened to Cara and Aelyx to Jim Crow laws and segregation in the south during the 1950s and 60s and that was a point brought up by the book. There was a huge discrimination towards Aelyx and by association, it extended to Cara and her family for being the host family for him. Cara was shunned in school and at the grocery store. I can only imagine how I would react to being treated like that, I don’t think I would be half as strong as Cara was.

One point that really impressed me was that Cara broke up with her boyfriend, had a couple hours to grieve about it but basically shook it off. However through her association with Aleyx it formed a rift between her and her best friend which led to a huge betrayal from her best friend and that caused a bigger emotional reaction from Cara then the break up did. But I really liked that, I’ve lost quite a few close friends and that has hurt me more than most break ups I’ve had. Usually though in YA books, breaking up with a boyfriend usually has a bigger highlight on the story and is the end of life as you know it, but I was impressed by how Cara brushed it off.

Now I read a couple of other reviews and found that a couple other reviewers do think that there is some instalove but I have to disagree, to me instalove is seeing someone and experiencing love at first sight, that did not happen here, the two MCs were so wary of each other and could barely tolerate being in the same room together.

I feel like there was no instant love here and no love triangle either. I love how the relationship grew between Cara and Aelyx. It was a gradual increase, they started off very wary and leery of each other and progressed to friendship and caring until they realized that they loved each other. It was a cute and sappy romance and it gave me this big dopey grin while I was reading. I love when that happens.

I want to take a minute to talk about Aleyx, while he was doing some pretty shady things on Earth, I have to say that I loved his personality, he straight up reminded me of a Vulcan. Kind of emotionless, honest, and logical. He didn’t perfectly fit the description but just reminded me of it a lot. I kept thinking about this comic strip that I saw on Pinterest a while ago so I thought I would include it.

a90c22f68d0a4de82e8ee80905c37a07

Yes. I totally think that’s how it would be dating Aleyx.

Overall this was a lot more than I expected and I was pleasantly surprised, I do plan on continuing on with the series, book 2 Invaded is already out but book 3, United, is scheduled to be released on August 2nd.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I think that this book put me in a bit of a reading slump, I didnt really care for it, I’ve heard that the series gets better after this one so I may stick with it and see, but I was basically dragging myself to finish this. Not good.

What are you currently reading?

Not really anything right now, I have a stack of books next to me and I’m planning on reading two chapters of each until I find one that hooks me.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Loved But Never Reviewed

ttt

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

I wasn’t really feeling today’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday. So in the list of topic ideas I saw a prompt titled “Books I loved but never reviewed.” I thought that was perfect because I suck at reviewing books sometimes I just don’t feel like doing it, or sometimes time just gets away from me and it feels like too much time passed to write up a review. Either way I suck at writing reviews lol. Also a lot of these are books that I read while I was on hiatus back in March, April, and May because I was on a blogging break I didn’t feel the need to write out reviews although I kind of wish I had. Another thing is that I don’t write reviews during a readathon, I don’t even take notes really, I should change that but I always feel like I need to spend my time reading instead of writing a review during a readathon.

Enough excuses, ten books I wish I had reviewed.

A Court of Mist and Fury and Lady Midnight

I tried writing a review for both of these books but I experienced something like writers block and just didn’t know what I wanted to say, I don’t even know how long I stared at a blank word document before I thought “ef it” and moved on.

The Darkest Minds

This is one that I read during a readathon and as soon as I finished it I picked up another book and now I feel that if I were to write a review I wouldn’t be able to do the book justice.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone

This was a book that I read before I started blogging last year and if I were to review I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Its so delightfully complex and I think it would be unbelievably difficult for me to review any of these books.

The Wrath and the Dawn

Book I read on hiatus, I’ll probably review it when I reread it because that will happen for sure.

Between Shades of Gray

Hiatus read.

I’ll Give You The Sun

Mixture of hiatus and readathon. The 24 hour readathon to be more specific, definitely no time to review it then.

Rebel of the Sands

This book left me feeling so conflicted that I’m honestly glad I never reviewed it. When I first finished it, I gave it a 3 star rating. But then I never stopped thinking about it, I still think about it, so then I bumped it up to a 4 star rating. My review wouldn’t have been fully accurate, this is the only book I’m glad that I didn’t review right away.

The Legend Trilogy

Beautiful, wonderful, love. Words could not express how much I loved this trilogy.

20160531_205303

Splintered

When I read this, I was in a bit of a reading slump while also just feeling down in life for a couple weeks.

What was your Top Ten Tuesday?

June book haul

20160630_202617
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

Last year I read Since You’ve Been Gone (and shamelessly listened to Kelly Clarkson for almost all of it) and really enjoyed Matson’s writing, also I had heard good things about this one so I thought I would pick this one up. I already read this and I really liked it.

20160630_202838
I had to do it.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan
The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan
The House of Hades by Rick Riordan
The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

The Trails of Apollo by Rick Riordan

I saw this at Walmart and couldn’t resist picking up, if only for the sole reason that it had an exclusive bookmark in it! Yeah that happened. I was holding it in the store and thinking to myself, I cant read this until I read the Heroes of Olympus series, I don’t own the Heroes of Olympus series, if I buy this I’m going to have to buy the Heroes of Olympus. Then thought to myself…oh well. This way of thinking is why I’m pretty much always broke.

20160630_202546
Voyager by Diana Gabaldon
I am almost finished with Dragonfly in Amber and I have a deal worked out to where I read one Outlander book and buy the next one.

Ruined by Amy Tintera
Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover
The Crowns Game by Evelyn Skye (I love her name!)
The Assassins Heart by Sarah Ahiers
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Every Last Word By Tamara Ireland Stone (Another awesome name!)
The Forbidden Orchid by Sharon Biggs Waller

For all of these…well the BF took me to Barnes and Noble, said that he wanted to treat me and I lost all self control…he’s an enabler.

23367270
The Darkest Magic by Morgan Rhodes

I had this on preorder to buy after I finished reading A Book of Spirits and Thieves and I am really excited to continue on with this series!

20160630_203356(0)

So yeah that is my June Haul, I hope you enjoyed!

Have you read any of these? What books should I pick up soon?
