Top Ten Tuesday 1/12/16

Good Morning everyone! It’s Top 10 Tuesday!

This is how I felt waking up this morning,

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

This week’s theme: Top Ten 2015 Releases I Meant To Get To But Didn’t.

I had such a hard time coming up with this list, so I googled “YA Book releases in 2015” clicked on the Goodreads list of this topic

My birthday photos and reading.

So yesterday was my birthday, I turned 24 and had a pretty great day.

I took the day off of work and the bf and I started off the day with a coffee date at one of my favorite places. 🙂

Coffee dates are my absolute favorite dates. I had a berry crisp with a caramel latte and it was heavenly!

I started reading Truthwitch and it is awesome! I am loving it so far!

After that, we went to the comic book store and shopped around for a while. I’ll do a separate comic haul later on.

Lunch at Italia! This is a yummy pear and gorgonzola salad, it is my favorite!

We did a little bit more shopping then went home and I read more of The Indigo Spell, book 3 in the Bloodlines series.

So good!

I also bought my birthday gift to myself (kinda tacky I know, but I have wanted this for so long now and I had saved for it and what better time to splurge than on a birthday?)

I am so in love with it! I have been taking pictures nonstop, and even practiced filming a few videos. Once I’m done moving I really want to film a bookshelf tour, I think that would be so much fun!

Finally, we went out to dinner with my family and went to this awesome BBQ place and then I went home and read more of Indigo Spell. I’m hoping to finish that and Truthwitch today.

All in all, it was a great day, I loved every second of it.

So that’s it for my journalish entry. I’ve got a Top 10 Tuesday that I need to go draft so look for that coming up.

Bloodlines review

by Richelle Mead
421 pages

Synopsis via Goodreads:

The first book in Richelle Mead’s New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlinesexplores all the friendship, romance, battles, and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive–this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone’s out for blood.

Why did I wait so long to read this?

I loved the Vampire Academy, I read the first book on a recommendation from a friend and after that first book I was hooked! I had book 2 overnighted to me and then had the rest of the books shipped to me. This friend also recommended me to read Bloodlines but for some reason, I didn’t get to it straight away. At first, it’s because I was a bit irritated with her, so I was being bratty and not listening to anything she said. Next my reason for not starting this series was because I didn’t have the rest of the books in the series, I had bought the first two and picked up the third at a used bookstore. So I didn’t want to start reading it because I didn’t have the rest of the books and I didn’t want to buy the rest of the books until I started reading the series. It just goes around in a circle huh?

I finally broke that chain.

I received a gift card to Amazon for Christmas so I used that to order the rest of the books in the Bloodlines series. Yay!

So yes I started Bloodlines and I read it within a day! My concern when I was thinking about reading it was that as soon as I finished book 1, I was going to need book 2 and so on with the rest. I was right.

I love this little secret world that Richelle Mead built and hid within our own, I love the characters and I didn’t realize how much I had missed them until I saw Rose’s and Dimitri’s names pop up.

So let’s talk characters, one thing that really annoyed me was a lot of the hypocrisy that the Alchemists have, towards vamps and dhampirs, but also the humans who volunteer as feeders. The revulsion Sydney felt when seeing vamps feeding processes was a little understanding, but the comments about vamps just taking blood when the Alchemists take vamp blood really stood out in my mind.

Also, the blatant sexism really frustrated me, I was expecting it though and what I really enjoyed was the small steps Sydney took to fight that sexism forced on her from the other Alchemists and her own father. Keith pissed me off to no end and it satisfied me to see Sydney get to a point where she wasn’t going to tolerate it anymore. I kept feeling really bad for her whenever Keith would throw her under the bus and her father would call and berate her.

Even though I had issues with two events they didn’t lower the book for me at all, if anything they really emphasized the character growth that Sydney experienced.

So Rose, Lissa, Jill, and Dimitri weren’t the only previous character name to pop up, We get to see Adrian! I adored him in the Vampire Academy and was so happy to see him as a primary character in this story.

The last thing that frustrated me with the story were the issues that Sydney and the Alchemists encountered that had very obvious answers and solutions, seriously if they just followed their train of thought for more than two seconds they would see the answer is sitting right in front of them. But whatever.

I could not put this story down for the life of me, it was just fantastic, even with those issues I had, they did not damper this reading experience for me. I cannot wait to continue on with the series and it has been the only thing I can think about right now. Actually has soon as I finish this up I am going to start the Golden Lily.

Bout of Books Day 3

All I can think about is continuing on with the Bloodline series.

I’m about 75 pages into Red Rising by Pierce Brown and even though I’m liking what I’m reading so far, all I want to do is pick up Golden Lily and continue on with Bloodlines. I actually think that’s what I am going to do so that I can finish up with Bloodlines and give Red Rising the 100% focus and attention that it deserves.  I ended up not getting much reading done on Day 3, I had a bit of a headache so I just laid in bed and watched a bit of Netflix and gave my mind a chance to relax.

So not much of an update besides the fact that I am going to abandon my entire Bout of Books tbr and just devour the Bloodlines series.

so exciting update huh.

Drop everything!

The Heartless by Marissa Meyer cover reveal has finally happened!

Heartless Reveal link from the tweet.

Here’s the photo from the entertainment website.

Let me just say that I am very excited for this, I love the lunar chronicles, they have rocketed to the top of my favorite series. I also love Alice in Wonderland so I am thrilled that we are getting another retelling from Meyer.

Now I don’t really love this cover, my first thought when I saw it was, “Was there a mistake?” It follows a similar style of the Lunar Chronicles. A simple minimalist cover, the color red standing out, Bold title font with the same font and color.

I’m not sure what I was expected but I was expecting a little bit more from the cover, something with hearts, or maybe a garden. But I think the cover will end up growing on me.

I also read the little excerpt from the site and it is intruging.

I already couldnt wait for this book to come out and now I really cant wait!

Carry On Review

Carry On
by Rainbow Rowell
522 pages
My rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Synopsis via Amazon

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here–it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On – The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story – but far, far more monsters

My thoughts:

First thought.  Every time I think about Carry On “Welcome To The Black Parade” gets stuck in my head. All I hear is Gerard Way screaming, “We’ll carry on, we’ll carry on,  and though your spirits gone believe me your memory will carry on,” Am I listening to that right now?

Another thing before I continue on, there are so many similarities between Carry On and Harry Potter; within the first 50 pages or so the similarities and comparisons are beyond obvious. While there’s nothing wrong with that and it’s understandable because Carry On was a Harry Potter parody in the story Fangirl, but I was still hoping Rowell would create a more original story for this.

At the start of the book it was hard to kind of separate Carry On from Harry Potter, I kept imagining Harry as Simon, Hermione as Penelope, and Draco as Baz, after a while Carry On started developing is own story, the characters evolved past Harry and Hermione and Draco, and it was easier to see it as it’s own story in it’s own world.

I feel like this is a story that I will have to reread a couple of times before the Harry Potter comparisons fade away. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with a Harry Potter parody but Rainbow Rowell is such an amazing writer and I feel like she could have taken more creative approaches while writing, I feel like she didn’t need to lean on the Wizarding World as heavily as she did.

I could not get into the first few pages of the book, I found the story to be really slow, I did not like Simons attitude towards the start of it, I actually didnt like Simon until the midpoint of the entire book. You know who I did love though, Baz. Its really not that surprising since I loved Draco Malfoy but yeah Baz was my favorite, followed by Penelope. I was expecting a little bit more of a villainous attitude from Baz instead of a kind of silky emo teenage boy, but I still liked his character.

I enjoyed the multiple POVs in the story, Baz was my favorite POV, followed by Penelope, Simon, Agatha, Lucy and finally the Mage.

I feel like this will have to be a book that I will need to reread a couple of times before the Harry Potter similarities start to fade away.

Bout of Books Day 2

January 5th

I slept even worse last night, I went to bed around 10:30 p.m. and I woke up at 2:30 a.m. FML. KMN. I could not go back to sleep for the life of me. That sucked. Finally sometime around 4:30 I gave up and started reading Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. I read about 125 pages before I had to actually get up and get ready to go. I did finish it though around 2 o’clock. OMG it was amazing! I loved it! I will have a review up soon on it and literally the only thing I want to do is pick Golden Lily which is book 2 in the series. But I read a few more pages of Red Rising and about 50 pages of the 5th Wave.

WWW Wednesday 1/6/16

First WWW Wednesday of 2016!

I havent been reading as much as I had hoped, but its alright, Im not going to push myself too hard, but I want to make myself step up my reading

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World Of Words. Simply answer the following questions:

What have you recently finished reading?

What are you currently reading?

What do you think you’ll read next?

What have you recently finished reading?

So I have finished

Deathnote volume 5
This was pretty good, theres so much build up for the last one and I cant wait to finish it.

Frozen Tides
I was left speechless at the end of this book. I still do not have the words for this.

Why did I wait so long to read this?! Why!? Serisouly all I want to do is pick up Golden Lily now. Which is a problem for my currently reading situation.

What are you currently reading?

This is so good and I am really liking it so far BUT I really want to read Golden Lily, at the same time I dont want to put this down. Dilemmas.

Im also slowly making my way through

The 5th Wave and Deathnote volume 6. Im not in the mood to sit down and read them straight through, but i can handle a couple chapters at a time. The 5th Wave is so grim and kind of depressing. Dont know why I expected otherwise.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I really really want to pick up Golden Lily but I am probably going to read Ice like Fire and start the Fellowship of the Ring.

So thats it for this weeks WWW Wednesday,

What are you currently reading?
